BHUBANESWAR: Much to the cheer and excitement of the large Santali tribal population of the State, Orissa will have its first full-length feature film in Santali language soon.
Reflecting traditions
The film – Jewee Jurie – meaning life partner is being produced by SBT Movie Craft and directed by Ajay Routray who has been a long time associate of eminent filmmaker Prashant Nanda, informed executive producer Sohagi Majhi Rusika.
Though an entertainer with the thrust on a typical love story, the film would reflect the tradition and culture of the Santali society, added its scriptwriter Pratima Hota.
Oriya film industry’s successful music director Abhijit Mazumdar has scored the music, said the producer.
“It would be a big budget film and would be released in theatres across Orissa.
Besides, we have plans to market it in neighbouring states of Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal besides Nepal where Santal speaking community is dominant”, he revealed.
Tribal Development Minister and noted tribal leader Chaitanya Prasad Majhi, who was instrumental in opening of schools in Santali medium in the State, hailed the initiative while attending the ‘mahurat’ of the film held here on Sunday.
“Film is a very powerful medium and through it any message can reach out to the people in a better manner,” he emphasised.
The Orissa Film Development Corporation chairperson Sitakanta Mishra and director of the Biju Patnaik Film and Television Institute of Orissa, Surendra Sahoo, both present on the occasion, also appreciated the initiative to make films in ethnic languages.
The film casts debutante actors Bulu and Shruti as the lead pair besides versatile actors George Tiadi, Akshaya Bastia, Minaketan and Bidyut Prava among others.
It is scheduled for a release in October, hinted the production manager.
